Our Program

What is a typical class like?

Classes at Pennridge Tai Chi start with warm-up Qigong exercises designed to loosen the joints. We work on “fundamentals” – the nuts and bolts of Tai Chi. We learn how to stand using the “Embracing the Tree” posture and the “checklist” of proper body alignment; we learn how to move by practicing Tai Chi walking, a slow method of movement that improves balance, stability, and focus; we learn how to breathe by synchronizing our breath with our movements. The class will focus on certain movements in the form and use repetitive drills to build muscle memory.

The remainder of the class is spent working on the Tai Chi forms. Repetition is the key to learning, so we review the form movements each week, and add new movements until the entire form is completed. It is expected that the student spend time during the week practicing the lessons learned in class.

We offer Tai Chi to students with all levels of experience. Every student learns at their own pace. Our philosophy is that we are all beginners and are always learning something new. At our locations, we teach the following Tai Chi Forms:

Qigong forms are integrated within our classes. Some of the key lessons in Qigong include integrated breathing, movement and meditation. Pennridge Tai Chi teaches a variety of Qigong forms, and offers weekend workshops regularly. We currently teach the following Qigong forms:

Eight Section Brocade Qigong

Also known as Eight Pieces of Brocade, this is one of the oldest and most popular Medical Qigong forms. It was created in the 12th Century as part of a wellness program. There are many different styles of the Eight Section Brocade Qigong. With only eight movements to learn, this Qigong exercise can be integrated into any fitness program.

Six Healing Sounds

This form is a combination of simple, specialized movements and specific sounds. The Six Healing Sounds focuses on 6 major organs and their corresponding meridians, as well as integrating Five Element Theory. This is a wonderful Medical Qigong set.

Tai Chi Ball Qigong

Tai Chi Ball training is common practice in both external and internal martial arts in China. It can strengthen the torso, condition the muscles, and increase physical power by using the mind to lead the Qi. Tai Chi Ball Qigong training was once a major training tool to enhance Pushing Hands ability. Pennridge Tai Chi teaches Tai Chi Ball Qigong to all classes. It is a fundamental tool designed to teach the student how to move using the entire body.
